Overly Complex and underwhelming

I've been playing D&D for decades and was so happy to see them a game based in my favorite Inn in Water Deep. My whole family was super excited to find this game and we cancelled a campaign session to play this game instead. We were disappointed, to say the least. The game itself, the board and pieces are cute, bright, and in the case of the gems, pretty. The instructions are not very clear. In fact, they are down right confusing. We turned to YouTube to figure out gameplay. It still wasn't very clear after watching several videos. Gameplay is underwhelming and almost tedious. I didn't enjoy it and I ended up winning by a lot of points. Maybe I expected the Yawning Portal game to be more than it was, but I was severely disappointed

Great fun game to play

This game has been fun. Myself and a few friends played this together. My friends have played and ran their own D&D groups and I’ve never played. But it was still fun and entertaining. It kind of reminds me of a medieval semi monopoly game lol. Due to the smaller sized gems and characters, I really don’t suggest having small small children or animals around. They are easy to get lost or eaten

Fun Game!

This is a fun game but we are still learning how to play it. The pieces are well made and the instructions are fairly simple however there are allot of variables to the actual gameplay. My teens are really having fun learning more about D&D and can't wait to get more immersed in it with their friends. Quality game by a well-known company.

Awesome Family Game!

This new genius way to play D&D; Dungeons & Dragons: The Yawning Portal Game is one that brings family together for a fun memorable experience. My family and I really enjoyed playing this "strategy game of famished beasts and fantastic feasts". This game calls for 1-4 players my family and I decided to play in pairs for are large family of 8. I highly recommend for any group gathering.

Excellent game with cosmetic D&D aspects

A very fun "Tavern Simulator" resource management game with some strategic backstabbing thrown in for good measure, The Yawning Portal basically revolves around trying to satisfy the dietary requirements of various patrons of the tavern. If the D&D branding is throwing you off, just be aware that there are no actual D&D elements in this game besides artwork and some basic fantasy RP terminology - there is nothing in the gameplay that resembles D&D at all. The gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Splendor, especially the feeling of handling the generously chonky gem tokens. The rules have a couple of parts that seem a little complicated for an otherwise simple concept, and some interesting rule deciphering conversations were had by our group when first playing it. The scoring at the end in particular can be a bit math-y and it's next to impossible to know during the game how anyone else is doing score-wise until close to the end of the game. Despite a few minor tricky bits, the core gameplay is fun and finding ways to cut your opponents' feet out from under them is very satisfying. We'll definitely be playing this one again!

Excellent family game

Dungeons & Dragons: The Yawning Portal Game is a tactical & fun game. There are interesting rules which take some time to understand and it requires a well thought plan to win the game. Quality of the board, card and gems is super good. Gems in particular are beautifully crafted. Main game board is quite illustrious, full of characters and designed magnificently. Overall brilliant game. Great time spent with friends/family and this game is for all occasions.

Huge it with my D and D kid

My oldest is a big dungeons and dragons fan so she was stoked when she saw this. The graphic are amazing. We both appreciate how the board pieces together like a puzzle and breaks down for easy storage. The game pieces are very detailed as well as the cards. Her and her friend have really enjoyed this game.

Beginner starter for main game

Dungeons and Dragons by Hasbro is a very complex game that one needs to emerge fully for game play. I must admit the whole thing scares me. However, I saw the Dungeons and Dragons: the yawning portal. This seems more simplistic with a smaller realm and story line that isn't so intimidating. I would recommend this game to anyone who has an interest for the main game but wishes to ease themselves into before diving deep in the world. Very easy and short lived instructions. Easy board to set up for 2 or up to 4 players. Game pieces are sturdy and nice to hold. Cards have a nice dexterity to them. Cute and convenient holding display, although cardboard, organized well. Bright and clean vivid colors. It's like a beginner guide game for the whole thing.

So fun to play with kids

I really enjoyed playing this game with my family including my two kids who are 8 and 10. They thought the game was so silly and fun. The only downside is that there are a lot of little pieces that I'm worried my kids will lose. We will have to be sure to keep track of all the pieces. But we will definitely be playing it again, next time maybe we'll invite some friends!

Beautiful components and art, but very boring

I'm going to be completely direct here, my son and I didn't enjoy this game in the slightest - and we play Dungeons and Dragons campaigns pretty often. I feel the name "Yawning Portal" is very accurate, because we were incredibly bored. It is an extremely technical game with no dice rolls or anything of that nature, just robotic procedures you have to go through each turn to collect foods and gems. I love the world of D&D but this game is a total miss in our opinion.

Fun game - You don’t have to love DnD

My husband is a huge Dungeons and Dragons fan so we picked this game up and I begrudgingly agreed to play. He loves the theming as a fan, but you do not need to be a fan to play this game. The concept is simple but we found a YouTube video that explained it much more clearly than that written directions. It’s a strategy game where you score points by setting pieces on the board to “feed” your customers. No fighting each other with cards, or complicated game play. We played with our 8 year old and she needed a bit of help but really enjoyed it (mostly for collecting the colorful gems). This is an easy game to learn and I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was.

I've never played D&D but I've wanted to...

This seems like it's a great game for those who know and love Dungeons & Dragons. For a total newbie like myself...I'm not sure. The game feels complicated and overwhelming when you open it. The best thing is the chest of colorful and very magical feeling plastic gems, lol. Being totally new to this universe...it's confusing. It honestly feels like a game for kids whose parents are intense D&D fans...Or just for true blue D&D fans. For me, even being a foodie and a board game lover, this seems a bit boring. I think its because I have no emotional connection yet to D&D. I didn't know that the Yawning Portal was a real place in this world, that it connects with many different stories, etc. It would be like a game on Hogsmeade if you don't really know what Harry Potter is. Overall, not for me. I'll be gifting it to my cousin who will appreciate it more than I can.

Yawning Portal game

You can play this game as a single player or with up to 4 people. I felt the instructions were easy to follow. Strategy is involved, so if you like that sort of thing, this is the game for you. If you like D&D, this is a fun new game to incorporate that theme, but as for someone who doesn’t know much about D&D, it’s also a fun game to play. Perfect for family game night.
